The local whistles on the train every night reminded Walter of the freedom he wanted to experience again. “I always wanted to know where that train was going,” he added, and all of it became a trial of patience for him in juvenile detention as he waited for a chance.

Walter had waited for that exact window of opportunity and quickly dashed to the doors of the exit. He added, “I ran out the back door — toward the sound of that whistle. And that was the first place I ever escaped from,” but it was not the end.
