Walter succeeded in pulling away from a major crime, some kind of prison escape. He said, “I ran out at the back door— to the whistle ‘s sound. And that was the first place I’ve ever escaped,” but not the last place.

Walter went to the train tracks and for an extended period of time did what he had wanted to do: he tracked them to see where they were going. After that he would travel north on the tracks, coming from North Carolina to Washington, D.C.
