The new friends of Walter didn’t take part in petty theft but committed even worse criminal activities instead. He eventually figured out his friends had robbed banks and managed not to get arrested because they were driving to North Carolina, where security was more flexible.

At first, Walter and his buddies keep on getting away with robbing banks, and he relayed, “After every score, we’d hand out on the strip at 14th and T [Streets], and act like big timers. We felt like gangsters.” Although in a point of sincerity Walter did admit: “I have nobody to blame but myself. I just enjoyed the feeling of having money.”
