A Heartbreaking Morning For The Love Family

Published on 05/25/2020

The love story of Bobby And Cheryl is spectacular, but others would say it is not really romantic. Even though they have been together for the past 40 years, one might have thought that they must have figured it out and kept the perfect recipe for a healthy relationship. On the surface, it may have been true, but there was one specific bit of information about Bobby’s past in which Cheryl probably knew hardly anything, and it would change everything once she found out. Furthermore, it came from one of the most unlikely sources.

After 40 Years Of Being Married, Woman Finds Out From The FBI Who Her Husband Really Is

Not Your Typical Morning

In January 2015, one morning, Cheryl woke up and began her morning routine as she normally did, whereas her husband, Bobby, continued to take a nap in their bedroom. Suddenly there was a knock at the door. In an interview, she told Humans of New York,  “I opened it slowly and saw the police standing there.”

“Crazy Lady”

A “crazy lady” had been living close to the married couple for years, and they knew the cops would sometimes come in and check her in, so Cheryl speculated that they must have had to knock at the wrong door.

Life-Changing

Cheryl went on to say “At first I wasn’t worried, but the moment I opened the door, twelve officers came barging past me.” By that point, she seemed to have no real understanding that this was a moment where her life would be totally shaken to the core.

Asking For His Name

Almost all of the police who raced past Cheryl wear unmistakable ‘ FBI ‘ labeled clothing, and she has followed them into her house because she doesn’t know what has happened. Cheryl told the press, “They went straight back to the bedroom and walked up to Bobby.” She did hear her husband was questioned by the officers: “What is your name?” In which he answered back with “Bobby Love.”

Absolute Chaos

Then she heard the officers ask her husband, “What is your name? Shaken up, Cheryl said,’ They went back to the bedroom and walked up to Bobby.'” He replied, “Bobby Love.

In fact, they kept asking: “No, what’s your real name?” And in a hushed tone, her husband said something. The officers further said, “You’ve had a long run,” and then the police put Bobby in handcuffs as Cheryl protested and asked what was going on. When they pulled him out the door, he told his wife, “This goes way back, Cheryl. Back before I met you.”

She had no clue as to how to react. She pleaded and asked what was going on. He said, trying to push him out the door, “This goes back, Cheryl. Back before I met you.” She was very confused.

Walter Miller

In the 1960s, Walter Miller grew up in North Carolina and later described his entire childhood as “pretty normal.” His family was very poor, where his mother had difficulty raising eight children. Walter eventually started falling through the cracks.

An 80’s Concert

It all began when Walter was going to a concert with Sam Cooke. He said remembering those days, “The crowd was really moving because it was dance music. And Sam Cooke didn’t like that. He kept telling people to sit down.

And after only two songs, he walked off the stage.” Right after cheekily shouting a profanity aimed at the stage, Walter was immediately charged with disorderly conduct. Afterward, he said this about the incident: “Things went downhill pretty quickly after that.”

Years Of Petty Crimes

After that concert by Sam Cooke in 1964, despite his young age, Walter already had a record. Things immediately began spiraling down, and Walter eventually revealed in an interview,  “I got into all sorts of trouble.” He continued on, “I lifted purses from unlocked cars, I was stealing government checks out of mailboxes, I got bolder and bolder.”

He said, “I lifted bags from unlocked cars, I stole government checks from the boxes, and I became crazier and crazier.” He committed small crimes often, something to get cash quickly.

Juvenile Detention Center

One time, he stole from the band room at his school, was discovered and was eventually sent to a local juvenile detention center. After so many years of minor offenses, he finally came face to face against the extreme consequences. And just what were they?

His Life Quickly Changed

Walter ‘s life rapidly changed from having so much freedom to do whatever he wanted to follow the strict code of juvenile detention. “I hated everything about the place,” Walter confessed several years later, making a big fuss about the food and violent acts in particular. “I still have scars from all the times I got beat up,” he briefly stated, although he’s been out the center for years.

“I still have scars from all the times I’ve been beaten,” he said, even if he stayed in the center for many years. Such memories and experiences would always be on him and with him.

Calculating A Plan

In the evening, Walter would fall asleep, listening to the trains going by, and the sounds conveyed the illusion that it was safe beyond the center walls. He knew that he had to get out, but he had to investigate and find out how first.

A Daring Escape

The local whistles on the train every night reminded Walter of the freedom he wanted to experience again. “I always wanted to know where that train was going,” he added, and all of it became a trial of patience for him in juvenile detention as he waited for a chance.

One evening, his chance came when the guard managed to turn his back, to check the time, on the doors of the detention center. Walter had waited for that exact window of opportunity and quickly dashed to the doors of the exit. He added,  “I ran out the back door — toward the sound of that whistle. And that was the first place I ever escaped from,” but it was not the end.

Walter succeeded in pulling away from a major crime, some kind of prison escape. He said, “I ran out at the back door— to the whistle ‘s sound. And that was the first place I’ve ever escaped,” but not the last place.

Making His Way To The Tracks

Walter went to the train tracks and for an extended period of time did what he had wanted to do: he tracked them to see where they were going. After that he would travel north on the tracks, coming from North Carolina to Washington, D.C.

It seemed as if things turned around for Walter for a while there. He was living in Washington, D.C. with his brother. So, Walter stayed in his city apartment at the time, enrolled in high school, and actually started going to his classes and played basketball with his friends. Yet once again, Walter eventually became part of the “wrong group of kids,” and his life again would become more complex.

However, once again, Walter soon became part of the “wrong group of children,” and his life again became more dramatic. He could not seem to remain in the straight line; it was almost as if his smell had troubled, but that was the beginning of something greater …

Much Worse Crimes

The new friends of Walter didn’t take part in petty theft but committed even worse criminal activities instead. He eventually figured out his friends had robbed banks and managed not to get arrested because they were driving to North Carolina, where security was more flexible.

At first, Walter and his buddies keep on getting away with robbing banks, and he relayed, “After every score, we’d hand out on the strip at 14th and T [Streets], and act like big timers. We felt like gangsters.” Although in a point of sincerity Walter did admit: “I have nobody to blame but myself. I just enjoyed the feeling of having money.”

Getting Caught Again

Shortly afterward, Walter’s luck ran out. He and his friends had completely vanished with a range of bank robberies, but one day in August 1971 the plan all crumbled. One of the banks he targeted had a silent alarm which was used by a bank teller to notify the police about the ongoing robbery.

The authorities were already waiting for him in the parking lot when Walter walked out of the bank. “I tried to get away, ducking and weaving, running through cars,”  he remembered, but when he was shot by a cop, that was about it. He has been imprisoned, but he has found another way of changing it.

Sentenced For His Crimes

Walter was found guilty to robbery of this bank and convicted for another bank, and was sentenced to a total of 25 to 30 years. He got heartbreaking news at this time – he found out his mother had died. He made a promise to change his future while he was overwhelmed with grief.

Maximum-Security

Walter had made numerous appeals, but they had all failed. Even though he had used to be in jail, he had decided to move from maximum security to a minimum-security facility on the hill, the only way his life would be slightly better. That is why he had drawn up a plan.

His Work Paid Off

Walter decided to commit to himself to do better and change his life. “I became the perfect inmate. I never had a mark on my record,” he said. His hard work has paid off, and he was transferred to a minimum-security center for his excellent behavior. His new environment was more like a camp than maximum security, and although the facility still had high barriers and gun-towers, there was also a greater sense of liberty.

Things Were Changing

The prison inmates could go outside and contact their family members. Walter could even have his own radio show, so he didn’t really want to escape at the beginning – but everything changed, but then something happened.

Everything Went Downhill

The role made Walter more relaxed, something he did not feel in years, as he liked being a radio host. That being said, after an inmate yelled at the prison’s captain, who erroneously thought Walter had been the one that shouted, everything immediately collapsed. It didn’t end there yet, of course …

Too Many Negative Reports

Ever since then the captain has been picking on Walter and begins to give him a hard time. The captain would write him up regularly for infractions according to Walter. “The negative reports kept piling up until I was one mark away from being sent back up the hill,” added Walter, who agreed that it was necessary to ponder of a way out as he didn’t really want to have to backtrack.

A New Opportunity

Due to Walter’s negative reports, one of the prison’s toughest workers was allocated. He and a couple more detainees had to clean up the roads, and they had to wake up before the remaining prisoners, get on a bus and drive to Raleigh to collect trash.

The Plotting Begins

He then recollected, “It was awful. People would be throwing hamburgers and milkshakes at you. And it was almost winter, so it was starting to get cold.” He did see this as an advantage despite the unfortunate circumstances.  “That’s when I started planning and plotting,” Walter continued to say.

His Big Escape Plan

Walter continued to save money and take note of the things, including the information that the Tuesday morning shift guard was somewhat more unreliable than the others when he plotted his great escape. Upon boarding the bus, each convicted individual had to be pat-down, but this guard just let them pass by and onto the bus.

Collecting The Necessary Information

Also, Walter began to notice that the bus always stopped at the intersection, and was right near a wooded area. He spent months gathering all the details he could and then made a decision on Monday night while watching football.“That was going to be my last night in prison,” Walter stated.

The lazy guard was just at the entrance of the bus on Tuesday, just as was anticipated. Walter was ready and took all out of things inside his locker. He ended up taking the civilian clothes and wore them under his prison uniform because they allowed him to wear it for the radio broadcast.

Wailing Of The Sirens

Walter went to the other side of the bus and stood next to the emergency exit. He said, “As we slowed down for a stop, I swung open the back door — and I was gone,” and quickly removed his jail clothes until he went deeper into the forest, the wail of the sirens getting more and more distant.

The Death Of Walter Miller

“I could hear the alarm blaring behind me, but I didn’t look back,” Walter, when recalling what happened then. Once the coast became clear, he calmly began by asking people he encountered to get to the station of Greyhound and then they would tell him to keep going. At last, he got to the station and could take a bus into the city of New York after borrowing an ample of a stranger’s money.

Bobby Love

Walter – now called Bobby – came to New York in November 1977. He initiated a fresh start and used the small amount of money he had to pay for a motel room, but the money ran out early, and he was forced to live on the streets. Nevertheless, Bobby was able to build up his new life from the streets, and he was able to obtain a birth certificate, a number of social security and, later, a driving authorisation through some deception and lucky breaks.

Bobby And Cheryl

Bobby got a job in the 1980s in Brooklyn’s Baptist Medical Center and met a colleague named Cheryl, who later became his wife. They attended Prince’s Purple Rain movie on their first day and also a concert by Gladys Knight and the Pips. Never before had Bobby met anyone like Cheryl. “Cheryl was innocent. The opposite of me. And that’s why I was so attracted to her,” He clarified, “Cheryl was soft. Almost in a naïve way.” He intended to start a future with her even though he knew that at any point in time, it could crumble.

Building A Life Together

Bobby and Cheryl married on 30th of March 1985 – he was only 34 years old, and she was 21 – and soon after that, they welcome the new part of their family,  Jasmine, their first-born. Their daughter Jessica was born, two years later and then they had twins, Jordan and Justin, 11 years after.

Bobby had two jobs, but he stayed an attentive dad, even though he has only a short sleep of two hours each night. In addition to work, Bobby also took part in community meetings, volunteered and took part in church work. His life was perfect, but behind it, everything was his immense shame. Walter told the New York Daily News that he would tell his wife this: “I’m not going anywhere unless somebody takes me.”

His Secret

Even when Bobby would want his wife to know about his past, he insisted on saying that he “just couldn’t risk it.” He still felt like his life before was in the rear mirror, although he said Cheryl was a “righteous woman” and would probably encourage him to give up to the police.

Nonetheless, he still contacted some members of his family in North Carolina, and only after his passing, he asked his sister to tell Cheryl his secret. His sister persisted, however, and to come clean to his wife. He said, “That part of my life was buried back in North Carolina. And it wasn’t coming back,” but he would prove people wrong shortly after.

Noticing Oddities

“There was a piece missing,” Cheryl said, “something was different,” when she and Bobby’s friends found a couple of discoveries. For examples, in pictures, Bobby hated to talk to a stranger and often careful and kept himself always. Sometimes people stop and ask him for something trivial or directions, and he still “seemed spooked.”

He would shield himself during arguments with Cheryl. “I remember during Christmas of 2014, I was on my knees in church, saying ‘Lord, please, I can’t do this anymore,’” Cheryl recalled. “That was a few weeks before everything went down.”

Everything Came Crashing Down

Bobby went back to North Carolina for the funeral of a sibling since several years have passed by, and he felt a bit comfortable. This is the time when someone noticed him and told the authorities, Bobby claims. Just a short time later, in his own bedroom up to the north, the FBI put him under a strap. She also admitted that her hurt overcame her embarrassment.  Cheryl said, “My world came crashing down,” She added, “Bobby had deceived me for all those years. There was no truth in our house,” and in a different interview, Cheryl quipped she was “like I was in a movie — a Lifetime movie.” “She still felt that she had to do something, despite her conflicted emotions.

Cheryl was visiting him and seeing how terrible his situation was. She remembered that  “When I first visited him in prison, he broke down crying,” and she added, “His head was in his hands, and he told me: ‘I know, you’re going to leave me.’ I told him: ‘No, Bobby Love, I married you for better or for worse. And now this is the worst.” She began to work on her next move, thinking about that.

In an effort to give her husband his freedom Cheryl did everything she could imagine.
