Due to Walter’s negative reports, one of the prison’s toughest workers was allocated. He and a couple more detainees had to clean up the roads, and they had to wake up before the remaining prisoners, get on a bus and drive to Raleigh to collect trash.

He then recollected, “It was awful. People would be throwing hamburgers and milkshakes at you. And it was almost winter, so it was starting to get cold.” He did see this as an advantage despite the unfortunate circumstances. “That’s when I started planning and plotting,” Walter continued to say.
