Prom Dresses That Would Surely Turn Heads

Published on 10/13/2019

A prom is an exciting event in any teen’s life. It’s a night to celebrate and let loose while trying to dress to impress. No detail is forgotten: the dresses are flawless, the makeup done to the nines, and the accessories are all in place. Even matching shoes are picked out months in advance.

Going Green

It isn’t often that you see girls wearing recycled materials during the year’s most anticipated night. Many girls spend months preparing for the event, dreaming of the moment that they would enter a hall decorated with many beaming lights after getting out of their limousine all boozed-up. They want to have a memorable night and so did these girls, who clearly wanted a night to remember as evidenced by their unique gowns. Who knew going green can look so good?

Spiky Yet Classy

In case you were wondering what the concept of this girl’s prom gown was, well, she wanted her dress to express her personality – spiky yet classy. For this reason exactly, she chose to wear a rather traditional dress with a common silhouette but with a semi-sheer fabric that showed off her torso. To make her dress a bit edgier, she customized it by adding some “spikes”, which was the finishing touch to her overall look.

Halloween-Inspired

The girl might have gotten confused with Halloween and prom – or we hope that this formal’s theme was fictional characters, for her sake. Pikachu may not have been expected to make an appearance at her prom, but if she is happy with how her costume/dress turned out, then we are not in any place to say otherwise. However, we cannot help but wonder what her date looked like.

Standing Out By Blending In

We are not quite sure why this pair chose to wear this peculiar matching ensemble – perhaps they thought blending in would make them stand out. It is also possible that this couple is made up of two nature fanatics who wanted to stress how wild they are about the environment. Whatever the reason may be, we cannot really say that the final result was glamorous since both outfits blend so much that they made an odd ensemble. This is not what we had in mind when we talk about a traditionally classy prom.

Saving Money

Prom dresses can be very expensive, and not everyone can afford the big, bejeweled gowns which seem mandatory on prom night. Therefore, many would risk not knowing how a dress would actually look like than spend a ridiculous amount of money just for a one-time event. This girl was keen on saving money but ended up with a dress we think she would not wish even on her worst enemy. But then again, she did save a few bucks, so she might not think this was too much of a disaster.

Inspired By A Blockbuster

We are pretty sure Cruella de Ville would say ‘Yes’ to this dress since it has an uncanny resemblance to the pattern she loves most, one which was featured in 101 Dalmations, the 90’s blockbuster film. Despite being a fictional movie, it is hard not to notice the yellow and red accents of the spotted gown which take the canine similarity further, since the ribbons look like dog collars. However, if it makes you happy to wear this dress to your high school prom, then we are not stopping you.

A Dress That Will Crack You Up

This prom gown will probably crack you up – not because of how it was designed, its questionable choice of color or its asymmetrical line but because this dress was sewn onto the woman who is wearing it. She refused to wear another dress, but sadly, the measurements of this dress that she ordered online were clearly not right. You can see that there is a backward cleavage situation going on. Sometimes, it is best to wear something simple and plain than suffer all night long.

Color Coding Gone Wrong

Where do we even begin? Wearing red and black to the prom does not seem like a bad idea but somehow this pair managed to do THIS. They really went all out with the matching their overall look that the guy even dyed his red to match his date’s corsage. There was potential in the satin, custom-made ensemble if only the two decided to stick to keeping clean cuts. However, the criss-cross addition on the chest, legs, and arms threw classy straight out the window.

It Can Get Cheesy

It is a great idea to recycle, but sometimes the actual execution of the idea that we have does not really turn out great. This girl has the kind of figure that lets her wear whatever she wants, but it is like hanging a beautiful painting with a hideous frame. While Doritos are a yummy snack, wearing it for your prom is not exactly the best idea. Sticking to basic gowns is preferable, and they do not smell like cheese.

Someone Did Not Get The Memo

There once was a time when everyone talked about leopard print. It showed that a person was bold enough since they wore something wild and exotic and it gave the impression they were fashion-forward. Nowadays, however, wearing clothes that resemble animal print or fur is actually frowned upon, because animal cruelty is a major issue that many have spoken up against. Apparently, this woman did not get the memo.

Taking Things To Another Level

Yet another who did not get the memo, only this time, the animal is a zebra and this girl decided to but take things to another level by adding hot pink satin fabric. You can clearly see the commitment here as she even dyed some of her hair to match her ensemble dress – which also turns into shorts. As if all of these were not enough, this girl made sure the dress came with a belly slit. We are very confused but we admire the dedication.

Online Shopping Surprise

If you do not like wandering around stores and trying on numerous outfits, online shopping can be a treat. You can just log on to your favorite sites and find the dress that suits their taste. However, the stores sometimes ship the wrong color or size and the customer understandably gets disappointed. The picture below is like one of those expectations versus reality memes on the internet. We wonder if the girl on the right just sucked it up and wore the dress or if she tried to do some alterations on it.

The Proud Patriots

The proud patriots in the picture below really wanted to make a statement in their prom, so rather than wearing a traditional floor-length dress and a suit-and-tie, they showed off their admiration and love for the Land of the Free. It is illegal to cut up the flag, so they used alternative materials in making the overall look which would make a July 4th fanatic shout for joy. In case you missed it, the name of a former POTUS is on the suit jacket.

Unlike some other gowns on this list, this seems to work more – or at least, we thought so until we noticed the eyes that stare back. Just imagine making your way on the dance floor and finding a pair of massive, turquoise eyes staring at you – we bet anyone would be terrified! What’s more, the tinsel-like bottom gives this dress a look that resembles a mop, which is probably not the look this girl was going for.

The Denim Duo

The denim duo in this photo might have thought denim was the only way to go, but we feel they took the blue vibes a bit too far wearing all-denim all over. Many people know that denim is not really a breathable fabric, so we are a bit anxious about all the excess fabric at the bottom – just imagine all that extra weight! If someone told us this pair danced the night away, we would be really impressed, but all in all, the two look very pleased, so we can’t help but be supportive.

Piñata Prom

We think this woman’s dress looks a lot like a Piñata while the guy next to her looks like he just came from a zoo-version of Guys And Dolls. If you take into account the decorations that can be seen in this picture, it seems as if this was the theme for the entire event. The girl’s shoes caught our attention though since they are pretty interesting. We wonder if she got them where her date got his suit.

News Fashion

Staying up to date with the latest events is important, for sure, but this beautiful belle took things a bit too far when she thought of making a dress out of newspapers. The black and white together with shades of grey is something we can actually get on board with, but just imagine going to the toilet with newspapers stuck on your body. You have to watch your every move because it is quite easy to have an accident in the toilet.

Balloon Belle

Balloons always make an event more festive, and this girl definitely looks like a walking celebration. She certainly did not want prom to slip by as another pointless event, so she decided to paint her face and sport an over-the-top balloon-wig. She showed her creative side and flaunted how popping she is. Many people probably avoided dancing too close to her, afraid that an innocent brush might end up bursting her whole outfit. We know we wouldn’t want that if it were us.

Matching Ensemble

While we are not sure what the theme was in this formal, these two managed to match, so we are giving them extra credit for that. The guy is wearing a print that looks like a subway system map, while the girl’s dress looks like something between shiny wrapping paper and a SpongeBob SquarePants costume. You have to wonder how they managed to find shoes that would match their pretty unique outfits, but these two are certainly dedicated to the cause.

Leaving A Mark

She might not have been “Prom Queen” or named the prestigious “Most Likely To Succeed” in their yearbook, but her classmates were wrong if they thought that she would finish high school without leaving a mark. However, we wonder whether “Trap Girl” was the nickname that first came to her mind when she made such a call since there are others that we think would be catchier.

Wearing Art

We do not know if this particular prom attire would get the great Andy Warhol’s approval, but these two deserve kudos for making use of pop art – something we doubt many would choose to do for a big night such as their prom. This combination of garments is especially smart because if this pair stands side by side, we can see a complete face but if they stand with their backs next to each other’s, we can see two faces.

A Colorful Ensemble

It is clear that this couple was not down with the memo which explained that the dress code for their prom consists of traditional gowns and black suits and ties, so they decided to do something else – show off their colorful personalities. We are pretty sure this pair stood out at their prom, but we will leave it to you to decide if that is a good thing or not.

Inspired By Peace

Why wear a plain and boring dress or suit and tie when your date is as cool as you? If you know that your date is the kind of person that goes with the flow and acts as your other half even if your ideas are really crazy, take advantage of it. Switch things up, especially since prom is one of those times when you are less expected to do so. This pair wanted their outfits to have a positive message. Do you think they were able to send the right message?

Spotted Dress

This is a perfect example of keeping it clean and traditional, but not giving up on the special snazzy addition which would make you stand out. The placement of the colorful polka dots on this dress shows that she did not want just a traditional dress. Her bold persona wanted emphasis on her great figure. The addition of dazzling rhinestones somehow formed a heart on her dress – which some might think is a cliche, but we actually find endearing.

“Stuck At Prom”

These two joined the “Stuck at Prom” contest, which was sponsored by Duck Tape. They actually agreed to go to prom sporting outfits that are only made of duct tape for a chance to go home with $10,000 each. The second place winners would get $5,000 each, but like a lot of other young couples who joined the competition, not everything was about the money. The girl said, “The clothes were fun to make, so we did it.”

For The Love Of Winni(e)ng

Winnie the Pooh is one of the well-loved children’s characters, so these two thought the prom was a chance to bring Pooh to life. Whatever floats your boat is fine by us, but we just hope people’s memories of their childhood were not destroyed that night!

Wrapped In Silver And Gold

This dress may look like fish scales and this girl may look like she was wrapped in aluminum foil, but we think if it made her feel special on her special night, then we believe it is worth it. To be honest, the girl in the photo seems to be pulling the look off quite well. Not many people can say that they look in scales or foil.

Online Shopping Spree Gone Wrong

The photo below shows another online shopping spree gone wrong. After seeing a gown that looks like a classy wedding dress, the girl in this picture realized she was willing to pay a bit more – as long as she looks and feels like a princess on the night of her prom. Sadly, she realized that she will not achieve her goal of looking glamorous as soon as she opened the long-awaited package. At least, she drew attention as she planned.

No Date, No Problem

This girl did not have a date for prom, but that did not stop her from going. She decided she was just as good a date as anyone else. She made sure everyone saw that. She looks happy with the final outcome and we can’t help but feel happy for her, as well. You go, girl!

Inspired By The Weather

The couple in this picture thought to themselves that this the best way to express how pro-seasonal they are. They decided that dressing up with a winter, spring, summer, and the fall-inspired ensemble is the way to go. If it poured that day, this dynamic duo probably had something to with it – most like the funky rain dance they did bring on the rain.
