70’s Flashback: Fabulous Stars Then & Now

Grease, Forrest Gump, and Star Wars. Happy Days, Three’s Company, and The Brady Bunch. The Beatles, Rolling Stones, and Pink Floyd. That’s right; we’re taking a trip down memory lane, to the 70’s that is. This was a time when film, music, designer clothes/fashion designers, and more defined the modern era and opened the floodgates of creativity. Take a look at some of the biggest 70’s stars who helped mold the era and what they’re up to today.

Well if it isn’t everyone’s (okay just the ladies) most favorite Grease star, Mr. Danny Zuko. It’s no secret that Danny Zuko was one of Travolta best roles in the 80’s. However with over 70 other hit films, his own airport, Kelly Preston as a wife, three healthy children, and appearing (recently) on the FX TV show, “American Crime Story: The People Vs. OJ Simpson”, Travolta seems to be doing just fine these days.

Cybill Shepherd

Cybill Shepherd was literally a beauty queen, becoming a model on the cover of Glamour Magazine.

After that film director Peter Bogdanovich recognized her and launched into stardom with films such as The Last Picture Show and The Heartbreak Kid. She’s Funny That Way was her latest role.

Diana Keaton

Starting her acting career back in 1970, Diana Keaton is truly a woman of many talents! Her role in the legendary film, The Godfather, was her first and most historical role to this day.

Diane’s career, both on and off screen, has positively continued to flourish — starring in a handful of Award winning movies, winning a handful of awards herself, become a skilled photographer, real estate developer, singer (occasionally), and even an author. Alright Diane, what can’t you do?

Jamie Lee Curtis

Thanks to her first acting role as Laurie Strode in John Carpenter’s Halloween , Curtis has become renowned as one of the top actresses in Hollywood.

Not only do we adore Jamie on the big screen, but the actresses’s awesome philanthropic efforts, as well as her skilled blogs/articles for The Huffington Post, makes us appreciate/love her even more!

Brooke Shields

Starting her career as a child star at the young age of 12 years old, Brooke Shields is currently a highly famous actress and model. However in 1983, Brooke ended her modeling career for education, attending Princeton University and graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Romance Languages.

Shields still acts in film and television roles in this day. A gorgeous actress on and off screen.

Michael Douglas

As one of the 80’s and 90’s biggest/hottest actors, Michael Douglas is more than happy to be alive, especially after his recent unfortunate battle of Throat Cancer.

But as the strong actor as he is, Douglas kicked cancer’s butt! Married to the ever-so lovely Catherine Zeta Jones, Douglas and Catherine have two children together. His latest role was in the Blockbuster hit Antman , alongside funny-man Paul Rudd.

Maggie Smith

With an outstanding 60+ years of acting experience, Maggie Smith is no stranger to Hollywood. Maggie has accomplished countless milestone including winning four BAFTA Awards for Best Actress, a BAFTA award for Best Supporting Actress, and three Golden Globe Awards.

From 2011 to 2016 Maggie delightfully charmed audiences worldwide with her performance in the hit TV British drama series Downton Abbey.

Jane Seymour

Making her big break thanks to the popular James Bond film Live and Let Die,Jane Seymour has continued to shine bright in Hollywood earning an Emmy Award, two Golden Globe Awards, and a Star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.

Since then Jane has published four self-help inspirational books, several children’s book, and has even become quite the talented fashion designer.

Kate Jackson

Kate Jackson is most known for her role as Sabrina Duncan in the Charlie’s Angels series.

And thanks to the success from this role, Kate landed a spot on the front cover of Time magazine, alongside Farrah Fawcett and Jaclyn Smith. She’s currently working on a memoir.

Cheryl Ladd

Keeping with former stars of Charlie’s Angels, Cheryl Ladd is up next.

After Charlie’s, Ladd was a familiar face on TV having starred in some 30 made-for-television films. Recently she has had more guest roles on shows like Chuck and NCIS.

Jaclyn Smith

Granted Jaclyn’s Charlie’s Angels days are long behind her, but she’s still acting and modeling to this day.

Smith has most recently appeared on Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and The District. Oh yeah, she also developed and marketing her own line of clothing and perfume.

Jodie Foster

Jodie Foster is frequently noted as one of the best actresses of her generation, the 70’s. Her role in Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver led to her big break-through.

Since the early 2000’s Jodie has focused her visions towards directing, which includes various episodes of the ever-so popular Orange is the New Black and House of Cards. Definitely a highly talented woman.

Charlene Tilton

Charlene Tilton is presumably best remembered for her role as Lucy Ewing, J.R. Ewing’s playful niece, in the TV series Dallas.

She most recently starred in 2014’s Not Another Celebrity Movie.

Robert Redford

Let’s be honest, it doesn’t get more famous than the man, the myth, the legend himself, Mr. Robert Redford. Beginning his career in 1960 as a guest star on several hit TV shows.

In addition to his TV career, Redford recognition as Best Supporting Actor for The Voice of Charlie Point won him an Emmy Award in 1962. Actor, director, producer, businessman, environmentalist, philanthropist, what can’t he do? It goes without saying, Redford is an inspiration to all.

Dolly Parton

Tennessee born and raised, the ultimate Southern Belle aka Ms.Dolly Parton. Dolly is hands down one of the most honored female country singers of all time.

As a Country Music Hall of Famer, Dolly has received an amazing 46 Grammy nominations. Just last year, she kick started her Pure & Simple tour.

Linda Blair

Regan, or more commonly known as Regan (the possessed child) from the horror film The Exorcist.

This role earned her an Academy Award nomination, winning a Golden Globe. Aside from her many acting roles over the years, she is also an animal rights activist and humanitarian.

Susan Sarandon

Ah yes, Susan Sarandon — one of Hollywood’s most favorite actresses and social/political activists.

Susan has won numerous Academy Awards and BAFTA awards. She currently stars in Feud as Bette Davis in FX’s anthology series.

Ali Macgraw

Like many stars, Ali got her big break while filming commercials. In the year 1970, she was noticed by producers and was casted in the film Love Story.

Even though the film did well in the box office, Ali was only casted for three more roles over the next 10 years. Recently, she starred in the stage production of Love Letters with her Love Story co-star Ryan O’Neal.

Robert De Niro

“Are you talking to me, are you talking to me?” One of the most awarded actors of this generation, De Niro has been in many films since the 60’s.

He won a best actor Oscar for his role in “Raging Bull.” His most recent film was a dramedy starring Anne Hathaway called “The Intern.” He also founded the Tribeca Film festival in New York City which is about to celebrate its 15th anniversary.

Suzane Somers

Presumably most famous for her role on the hit 80’s TV show, “Three’s Company”, Suzanne is currently a lifestyle guru, publishing several books on how to live a healthier life, as well as how to age well. Oh and how can we forget one of her strongest milestones in the 80’s, the “ThighMaster”.

Finishing in 9th place on ABC’s “Dancing With The Stars” proves just how inspiring this 70-years-old star is. A beaut inside and out.

Stockard Channing

Betty Rizzo (Rizzo) from Grease is hands down the most memorable role for Stockard Channing.

Additionally she’s renowned for her role as the dreamy First Lady Abbey Bartlet on The West Wing. She’s also won 13 Primetime Emmy Awards and 7 Tony Awards. Recently Stockard has a reoccurring role on The Good Wife.

Clint Eastwood

“Dirty Harry” Callahan is for sure one of Clint Eastwood’s most iconic roles that he played back in a 1971 series of movies which catapulted him to stardom.

Not only did Clint manage to conquer the acting world with various roles, but he also directs, winning an Oscar for Unforgiven and Million Dollar Baby.

Olivia Newton John

Back in the early 70’s designers surely loved Olivia Newton-John, and I don’t think they ever stopped loving Ms. Sandra Dee aka Sandy from the iconic film Grease.

Winning four Grammy awards and a long-time activist for environmental and animal rights issues makes Olivia a woman of many talents and passions. She was also a guest judge for Dancing with the Stars back in 2015.

Faye Dunaway

Faye Dunway has quite the collection of honorable awards including several Academy Awards, three Golden Globes, a BAFTA, an Emmy. Oh and she also was the first ever recipient of a Leopard Club Award, honoring film professionals whose work left a mark on the collective imagination.

Even though Faye began her acting career back in the 60’s it wasn’t until her later work came out that helped her flourish to the highly respected actress she is today. In 2016 she has work on two films that’ll be released later on and she also participated in the 89th Academy Awards.

Sissy Spacek

The early 70’s welcomed Sissy and this was the year that gained recognition thanks to her role in Badlands.

However her career-defining role came in 1976 when she played Carrie White in Brian De Palma’s horror film Carrie. A six-time Oscar nominee and three time Golden Globe winner to date, whose career is still going strong.

Ellen Burstyn

With a couple Academy Awards and Tonys, she established herself in the books as a legend.

The American Theatre Hall of Famer is also one of few actresses that won the infamous Triple Crown of Acting. To this day, she is still acting in various film and TV series.

Burt Reynolds

Known for some of the biggest hit films in the 70’s/80’s like “Cannonball Run”, “Smokey and The Bandit”, and “Deliverance.” The last big movie role Reynolds had was back in 1997 for the legendary film “Boogie Nights,” where he received an Oscar nomination.

Nowadays he he spends his time nowadays on his Florida Ranch, but no one will ever forget that 70’s Cosmopolitan spread where he appeared nude even if he is 80-years-old now.

Cher

One of the most iconic female pop singers of all time in a male-dominated industry (girl power for real). Cher became a television personality in the 70s with The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour, which was watched by over 30 million viewers weekly.

She is a super talented artist who is the only one to have a number-one single on a Billboard chart from the 60s to the 2000s. Apart from singing and acting, she is also known for her political views, philanthropic endeavors and social activism. She’s also a model, a fashion designer, and comedian.

Michelle Pfeiffer

Starting her acting career in 1978, Pfeiffer’s known for her role in Grease 2, and not long after she started gaining attention.

She has earned many honors in her career and is still acting to this day.

Kim Basinger

During the 70s Kim pursued a highly successful modeling career but then when she moved to LA she became an actress.

To this day she continues to inspire fashion designers with her impeccable fashion style. Recently having starred in The Nice Guys and Fifty Shades Darker, Kim is still stronger then ever on the big screen.

Jeff Bridges

Still very active as an actor, his most recent role was in the critically acclaimed film, “The Giver” He also come from an acting family with Lloyd Bridges as his dad, and Beau Bridges as his brother.

His next film is in post-production, called “Comancheria” but people will never forget him as “the Dude” in the cult classic, “The Big Lebowski.”

Rene Russo started out as a popular fashion model in the 70s, appearing numerous times on fashion designer magazine covers such as Vogue and Cosmopolitan.

In the late 80s Rene starred in a lot of popular big budget thrillers and action movies. To this day she is still acting, with her latest action comedy film Villa Capri, coming out later this year.

Loretta Swit

Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan from M*A*S*H, this is how many of us will always remember Loretta Swit.

This role granted her two Emmy awards. Her last and final time on the big screen was in 2010 in the play Amorous Crossings.

Carol Kane

Hester Street (earning her an Academy Award nomination) and Annie Hall were two of Carol’s claim-to-fame roles.

Since 2015, Kane has been a main cast member on the Netflix original series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

Al Pacino

An actor who has been consistently working since the 60’s in roles such as “Scent of a Women”, “Scarface”, and “The Godfather.” Pacino’s most recent film was for “Danny Collins” in 2015.

Apart from his acting career Pacino has been married three times, and is one of the few actors to hold awards in all categories of acting. An Oscar, a Tony, and an Emmy all grace his mantel.

Sally Field

Sally Field is one of the most popular actresses of her generation. Some of Sally’s most iconic roles include the mom in “Forrest Gump, “Mrs. Doubtfire”, and “Steel Magnolias.”

Her latest film has received a vast amount of attention, playing the love interest of a much younger man in “Hello My Name Is Doris.”

Barbra Streisand

Barbra Streisand, a one-of-a-kind legendary iconic actresses to viewers worldwide. Oh not to mention her the title as “Mother of All Contemporary Pop Divas” or “Queen of The Divas”.

With two Academy Awards, a Tony Award, 10 Grammy Awards, five Emmy Awards, an American Film Institute award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, four Peabody Awards, and nine Golden Globes — yea she’s a rock star. Ah and we can’t forget about her sixth tour that went down just last year. Ya, Barbara isn’t leaving Hollywood just yet.

Candice Bergen

Candice, former fashion model, has paved the way for many designer clothes, as well as starred in numerous films and TV shows since the lovely decade of the 70’s including some work on Broadway.

What is she up to nowadays? Well, Candice is currently working on the film Home Again.

Jacqueline Bisset

Bisset, an English actress who’s most notable for her roles in “Airport”, “The Deep” and other various TV roles.

Recently she commits a lot of her time to not as big roles. She was recently in “Miss You Already” with Drew Barrymore and Toni Collette.

Meryl Streep

Next up, Meryl Streep, the best actress of her generation as well as our current generation. It’d be silly to list all that she’s recognized for, because well yea the list would be pages beyond pages long. But just to give you an idea, she’s received an astonishing 30 Golden Globe nominations!

Like what? In 2017, she earned the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award. Five Came Back debuted March 31st, 2017 which is Meryl’s most recent work in this documentary film as the narrator. We love you Meryl!

Jane Fonda

An actress, political activist, writer, comedian, former fashion model, and fitness guru — this is Jane Fonda. Born to legendary actor Henry Fonda, Jane Fonda was (clearly) destined at an early age to an influential and successful life in Hollywood.

From the 60s, to the 70s, 80s and 90s, Jane Fonda continues to amaze, entertain, and enlighten audiences everywhere. Her most recent claim-to-fame is for her role in the popular Netflix series Grace and Frankie, alongside hilariously talented actress Lily Tomlin aka the dynamic duo.

Carrie Fisher

PUH-lease, as if Princess Leia needs any kind of introduction. As soon as Carrie Fisher hit the Hollywood scene in 1969, she was a huge success.

Both on and off screen, most say it’s thanks to her charm, wit, and overall character. Tragically at age 60 in December 2016, our dear Princess passed away from cardiac arrest.

Alan Alda

81 year old Alan Alda is a seven-time Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award winner – all thanks to his roles as Captain Hawkeye Pierce in the M*A*S*H, as the host of Scientific American Frontiers, and also as Presidential hopeful Arnold Vinick in The West Wing.

Mary Tyler Moore

Moore is known for her roles on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show, and her film roles Thoroughly Modern Millie, and Ordinary People.

While starring on the TV shows we listed, Mary Tyler Moore a cultural icon and inspired tons of young actresses, professional women, and feminists. In January 2017, Moore passed away at age 80.

Farrah Fawcett

Four-time Emmy nominee and six-time Golden Globe nominee, Farrah Fawcett made news worldwide when her iconic red swimsuit poster was released. From 1976 to 1977, Fawcett starred on the television series Charlie’s Angels.

From there, her fame only rose on Broadway, film, TV, and TV movies. In 2006, Fawcett was diagnosed with anal cancer and three years later, at age 62, she passed away.

Paul Newman

Oh man, what didn’t Paul Newman do? No, seriously. Newman was an actor, director, producer, race car driver, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and activist. Yeah, that’s a pretty long list! We won’t list all of his awards and accolades as we’d be here for a long, long time.

The man was a legend. Cool Hand Luke and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, anyone? In 1953, he married actress Joanne Woodward – for 50 years, they were happily married up until Newman’s death in 2008.

Joanne Woodward

Speaking of Joanne Woodward… She is best known for her 1957 Academy Award-winning role in The Three Faces of Eve.

Woodward’s last role was a voice role in 2013 on Lucky Them. Nowadays the 87 year old dedicates her time as an activist and philanthropist.

Dustin Hoffman

As far as antiheroes and vulnerable characters go, Dustin Hoffman is the king. With numerous awards to his name, Hoffman’s career has been nothing short of extraordinary.

In fact, in 2012 he was awarded the Kennedy Center Honors, with the this commendation: “Dustin Hoffman’s unyielding commitment to the wide variety of roles he plays has made him one of the most versatile and iconoclastic actors of this or any other generation.”

Catherine Deneuve

French actress Catherine Deneuve became known due to her roles as an aloof, mysterious beauty.

The 14-time César Award nominee is also known for her support for liberal causes. Deneuve is still acting, in fact she has two films coming out in 2018.

Geneviève Bujold

75 year old Canadian actress Geneviève Bujold is best known for her role as Anne Boleyn in Anne of the Thousand Days (for which she earned a Golden Globe).

Although she’s starred in a number of works and currently she works more in independent films.

Lee Grant

1951 is when Lee Grant made her film debut in Detective Story, for which she earned an Oscar and the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival.

However the following year she was blacklisted for 10 years in acting jobs as she refused to testify against her husband in the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) hearings. 1962 is when she made her return, earning seven Emmy nominations between 1966 and 1993. Grant made a return to the stage in 2013.

Sally Kellerman

60 years, that’s how long Sally Kellerman’s career spans and what a career its been. Kellerman earned an Oscar nomination for her role as Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan in the film M*A*S*H.

In fact, she appeared in many of Robert Altman’s films, however he wasn’t the only director Kellerman worked with. In 2013, she released her memoir detailing her life in the entertainment world.

Valerie Perrine

The Texan southern belle first began her career as a Las Vegas showgirl and in 1973, she actually became the very first actress to purposely appear nude on American TV by completely baring her breasts.

Her role in the 1974 film Lenny earned her an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival. The 74 year old actress is now retired.

Lindsay Wagner

It’s The Bionic Woman! Lindsay Wagner’s portrayal of Jaime Sommers is a pop culture icon, it’s also a role she has since reprised, earned awards for, and has inspired many with.

To this day, the 68 year old is still acting in both film and television.

Dyan Cannon

A three time Academy Award nominee, Dyan Cannon made her debut in 1958 with her last role in 2008.

Throughout her career, Cannon was also a director, screenwriter, producer, and editor.

Pam Grier

When Quentin Tarantino calls you “cinema’s first female action star”, you’re a pretty big deal.

Grier starred in Foxy Brown, Sheba, Baby, Jackie Brown , The L Word, and Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child to name a few. In 2010, her memoir was published, Foxy: My Life in Three Acts.

Sigourney Weaver

Once Sigourney Weaver debuted in the Annie Hall in 1977 as a minor character, it didn’t take long for her career to sky rocket.

Especially when she landed her fist lead role as Ellen Ripley in Alien in 1979. From there, she reprised her role in Alien in three sequels. Moreover Weaver has starred in Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters II, and Avatar. Weaver is also a Broadway star.

Anjelica Huston

66 year old Anjelica Huston is an actress, director, and a former fashion model. Huston is actually the third generation of her family to to have won an Academy Award – impressive.

With films like Prizzi’s Honor, Enemies, A Love Story, The Grifters, and others to her name, we’re not surprised by her long list of accolades. Maybe you know her best as Morticia Addams from The Addams Family ? Huston is also the author of two memoirs.

Jessica Lange

Since 1976, Jessica Lange has been racking up the awards and rightly so.

We won’t even list them all as it’s quite an impressive amount, Lange is a force to be reckoned with. Apart from acting, the 68 year old is also a photographer with three published works.

Barbara Hershey

For 50 years, Barbara Hershey has been dominating Hollywood. In fact, the Chicago Tribune dubbed her as “one of America’s finest actresses.

With a number of awards and nominations to her name, the 70 year old actress has more than left her mark on the big-screen. Hershey is still acting to this day, in fact she just appeared in the 11th season of The X-Files.

Diahann Carroll

No way we could forget the television and stage actress, singer and model, Miss Diahann Carroll.

82 year old Carroll was cast in some of the earliest film and Broadway productions to feature a black cast. Carroll has tons of stage and screen nominations and awards to her name.

Barbara Bach

70 year old Barbara Bach is best known as the Bond girl Anya Amasova from the James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me and as the spy Maritza Petrović in Force 10 from Navarone.

Bach married Ringo Starr, the Beatles drummer, in 1981. She retired from acting in 1986 and is focused on charity work now.

Susan Dey

The three time Emmy Award nominee and six time Golden Globe Award nominee is known for her roles as Laurie Partridge on The Partridge Family and as Grace Van Owen on L.A. Law.

Dey retired from the big screen in 2004.

Paula Prentiss

Where the Boys Are, Man’s Favorite Sport?, The Stepford Wives, What’s New Pussycat?, In Harm’s Way, The Black Marble, and and the cult TV series He & She – those are just some of the films that Paula Prentiss is known for.

Apart from brief cameo roles, Prentiss hadn’t appeared in any feature film for over 30 years until the 2016 film I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House.

Diana Rigg

English actress Diana Rigg is known primarily for two roles: one from the 60’s as Emma Peel in The Avengers and more recently as Olenna Tyrell in Game of Thrones.

Rigg also has a huge career in theatre. The 79 year old is still acting today with her latest role as Duchess of Buccleuch in Victoria.

Florence Henderson

For six decades, Florence Henderson graced us with her presence on-screen. Although we all know her best as Carol Brady from the ABC sitcom The Brady Bunch.

Henderson also appeared in film, theatre, hosted TV shows (including her own talk show and cooking show), and was also a contestant on Dancing with the Stars. Sadly she passed away in 2016.

Joyce DeWitt

From 1977 to 1984, Joyce DeWitt starred as Janet Wood on the sitcom Three’s Company (a role she earned during the show’s second pilot).

In 1984, she actually retired from acting for some years before coming back in 1999. The 68 year old has some roles here and there.

Jenilee Harrison

Speaking of Three’s Company, Jenilee Harrison, who played Cindy Snow, a replacement for Chrissy Snow (Suzanne Somers).

Harrison would go on to play Jamie Ewing Barnes in Dallas. At 59, she is still acting although her last acting role was in 2002.

Priscilla Barnes

Priscilla Barnes was actually also the replacement for Suzanne Somers on Three’s Company, she took over Jenilee Harrison’s role as the blonde but wasn’t “stupid”, however Barnes was finally the permanent replacement.

The 62 year old has also appeared in A Vacation in Hell, Licence to Kill, Mallrats, The Devil’s Rejects, and Jane the Virgin.

Marion Ross

From 1974 to 1984, the one and only Marion Ross played Marion Cunningham on Happy Days.

Although she already had an established film and TV career before this role. Ross is also a voice-over actress with works in King of the Hill and SpongeBob SquarePants. At 89, she makes the occasional appearance.

Erin Moran

When mentioning Marion Cunningham from Happy Days, you have to bring up Joanie Cunningham!

And let’s not forget the spin-off Joanie Loves Chachi. Moran retired from acting in 2012. Sadly she passed away in 2017.

Sally Struthers

Firth things first, you either know Sally Struthers as Gloria Stivic from All in the Family or as Babette on Gilmore Girls.

Either way, you know her name. The 69 year old is still an actress, voice artist, spokeswoman and activist.

Shelley Hack

Model, actress, producer, and political and media advisor – yup, we’re talking about 70 year old Shelley Hack.

Hack is known as the face of Revlon’s Charlie perfume and as Tiffany Welles on Charlie’s Angels. Together with her husband, they serve as the company principals for Smash Media, a production company.

Tanya Roberts

Speaking of Charlie’s Angels, Shelley Hack was replaced by the model and actress Tanya Roberts, who played the part of Julie Rogers. Roberts (whose real name is Victoria Leigh Blum) is known best as Kiri in The Beastmaster, Stacey Sutton in the James Bond flick A View to a Kill, and as Midge Pinciotti on That ’70s Show .

The 62 year old actress retired in 2005.

Penny Marshall

One half of the epic 70’s show Laverne & Shirley, Penny Marshall of course played the part of Laverne.

In the 80’s, she actually made her debut as a director. She still does a touch of acting but is more so focused on her directing career.

Cindy Williams

We couldn’t talk about Laverne & Shirley and not mention Shirley!

Cindy Williams actually got her start in commercials before her transition to film and TV. Williams published a memoir in 2015.

Goldie Hawn
